Endurance test for athletes and equipment

Solingen/Munich, June 2017: The Red Bull X-Alps is one of the toughest competitions of the year. It will kick off on 2 July in Salzburg. This year, athletes will negotiate an even longer, more demanding course during the hike and fly event. And Ledlenser is once again an official partner of the event for 2017 and will be there, close to the action, with a number of promotions.

The eighth edition of the Red Bull X-Alps will kick off in Salzburg on 2 July 2017. From here, 32 athletes from 21 nations will travel a distance of 1,138 kilometres to Monaco. Along the way, the extreme athletes will cross four Alpine ridges and seven predetermined turnpoints. There’s no other race in the world that puts an athlete’s technical skills, strategic adeptness and level of fitness to the test like the Red Bull X-Alps. Not only do participants need to be able to expertly manoeuvre a paraglider, they must also have enormous levels of endurance in order to cover the 100-kilometre distance and altitudes of thousands of metres.

The athletes and their equipment are exposed to immense strain in this competition: they are on the go from 5:00 am to 10:30 pm, when they must sleep. And equipped with the Ledlenser MH10 headlamp, they can navigate safely in both the early dawn and evening twilight. The top three athletes in the Leatherman Prologue – the pre-race on 29 June 2017 – are eligible to win a Ledlenser Night Pass, which would give them a strategic advantage in the Red Bull X-Alps. The ability to trek through the night could make the difference between winning and losing. The victor is expected to cross the finishing line in Monaco in no sooner than eight days. Fans can follow each of the athletes on Ledlenser’s website via a live tracking feature. With the live tracking feature, visitors can also participate in a digital treasure hunt for a chance to win a set of lamps from the current outdoor series.

See the light with Ledlenser

Ledlenser has been an official sponsor of Red Bull X-Alps since 2014, and will host an exclusive adventure weekend before the official start of the hike and fly event on Sunday. This event gives select journalists and influencers the chance to see for themselves what it’s like to compete in the toughest competition of the year.

The light specialist will be on location with various promotions at the starting line in Salzburg as well as at the turnpoints at Gaisberg and in Aschau and Chiemgau. There will also be a truck at the Red Bull X-Alps Flying Days opening event on Sunday in Aschau, inviting visitors to try out the new lamps. And on 5 July 2017, Ledlenser and the Chiemsee flight school will be hosting the Ledlenser Biwak Adventure for experienced paragliders. When twilight breaks, the night hike to the Hochgernhaus chalet – with paragliders and headlamps – commences. The following morning, the adventurous paragliders will fly back into the valley.
